Global Market Disruptors Viewed through Canada’s Rearview Mirror

Peter Oellers, 
Pershing, a BNY Mellon company

Peter Oellers is a Director for Pershing, a BNY Mellon company, in the Pershing Trading Services group. He is responsible for the management and development of the global equity business and leads a team dedicated to servicing client trading and execution needs in global equities and American Depositary Receipts. Before moving to Pershing in 2003 from The Bank of New York, Peter spent three years as manager of the global equity desk at BNY Global Clearing Services.

Peter began his career in 1994 at BHF Securities, which was acquired by The Bank of New York in 2000. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance from the University of Notre Dame.

Sean Kersey, 
Director, Head of Quantitative Trading Solutions
Scotiabank Global Banking and Markets

Sean Kersey leads Scotiabank’s Quantitative Trading Solutions team. This group is responsible for creating Scotiabank’s equity algorithmic trading and smart order routing strategies for use by our clients and internal trading desks. QTS also manages FIX infrastructure, risk controls, Transaction Cost Analysis, and other technology projects within Global Equity. Sean is a member of Scotiabank’s Best Execution Committee and is responsible for our market structure research.

Sean started his career with Scotiabank in 2005, originally with the Financial Engineering group working on derivatives pricing models. He was an original member of the Electronic Execution Services group developing our algorithmic trading platform and strategies. He then led the creation of Scotiabank’s “SCOR” order routing platform, before transitioning to his current management role supervising the QTS team.

Sean holds a Bachelor of Mathematics (Computer Science) from the University of Waterloo and is a CFA charterholder.

Jonathan Sylvestre, Head, Business Strategy, Equities Trading
TMX Group Inc.

Jonathan currently holds the position of Head, Business Strategy, Equities Trading at TMX Group.   His responsibilities in this role include strategy development and support for the TMX’s equities trading business.

Prior to joining the TMX Group, Jonathan spent almost a decade at the OSC as member of the Market Regulation Branch, where his responsibilities included the oversight of marketplaces and self-regulatory organizations, and policy making relating to market structure issues.  Prior to the OSC, he held positions in corporate finance, business valuations and auditing at a mid-sized national accounting firm.

Jonathan is a CPA, CA, and CFA charterholder and holds a Masters of Management and Professional Accounting degree from the Rotman School of Management (University of Toronto).  

Alex Taylor, 
Executive Director
CIBC Capital Markets

Alex Taylor is an Executive Director in the Prime Services Group and Electronic Access Group within CIBC Capital Markets.  In his current role he navigates market structure issues that affect trading systems, processes and supervision.  Prior to joining CIBC in 2010 as the manager, Equity Supervision Group, he worked at the TMX Group where he developed and managed equity trading product features and services. Mr. Taylor has over 20 years of capital markets experience at various institutions and previously held roles in market regulation, correspondent clearing and retail brokerage.

Mr. Taylor holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Economics from Brock University.   He is a member of IIROC’s Market Rules Advisory Committee and an active contributor to regulatory discussion in Canada on behalf of CIBC.
