Angela D'Angelo Marks
The Benchmark Company
Member Since 1984
This month’s Spotlight is on Angela D’Angelo Marks–STANY member since 1984. Angela is Vice President, Institutional Sales Trader at The Benchmark Company, a position she has held since 2004.
Angela’s path from a trainee keypunch and P&S clerk at Mayer and Schweitzer through 40 years in trading is a testament to her resolve in an industry that has not always fully embraced women. Originally, told that she “did not have the brains” to work in a trading room, Angela persisted. She joined Stephen Rothchild as a trainee on the trading desk progressing to senior trader at Herzog, Heine and Geduld. Following Merrill Lynch’s takeover of Herzog, Angela re-invented herself at The Benchmark Company. “With no experience as an institutional sales trader, and not having a book of buyside accounts; I did a lot of cold calling” says Angela, “but I have been here for 17 years, under the leadership of Rich Messina, CEO, and I have never looked back.”
“STANY was an important part of the industry, when I joined, and it still is. As a supportive organization that helps members navigate through changes in our industry and network and connect with fellow traders and customers, STANY played an important role in my career. I consider myself fortunate, to have been in our industry for over 40 years and a member of STANY for almost as long.”
Speaking to the mentorship program at her alma mater, St. John's University, a thing she does often, Angela’s advice for young women is, “don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, and don’t let anyone discourage you.”
